Shahla Sherkat, one of Iran’s most popular female editors, has been called before the Iranian Press Court. Sherkat was the long time editor and publisher of Zanan, a women’s magazine which was shut down in 2008. Her newest publication, Zanan-e Emruz, was started in May and came under fire by conservative forces even before it ever hit the newsstands. Sherkat has been accused of promoting feminist ideas that are considered un-Islamic. We’ll talk with Norma Moruzzi, a professor of gender and women’s studies at UIC who is working on a book about women’s lives in Iran.
