Iraqi forces have launched a major offensive to try to take back Iraq’s Anbar and Salaheddin provinces, which were captured by ISIS last week. US Defense Secretary Ash Carter has openly publicly criticized the Iraqi army, saying it lacks the will to fight. Marina Ottaway, a Middle East scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center, says the real issue is that U.S. officials have been deluding themselves that they can fight ISIS in Iraq without cooperating with the Shi’a militias and Iran. She argues that the United States must find a way to work with the militias, or leave Iraq. Ottaway joins us to discuss the U.S. strategy for combatting ISIS. (Photo: AP)
