Kaspersky Lab, a research group based out of Moscow, has uncovered proof of a powerful hacker collective known as the ‘Equation Group’, with possible ties to the NSA. The report reveals the group’s ability to rewrite the basic code inside a hard drive in order to store sensitive information, controlling the computer without the user’s knowledge. Kaspersky reports that 500 computers have been infected by the group in over 42 countries, but the particular rewriting of hard drive firmware is on a very select group of computers, being almost “surgical” in nature. We’ll talk about the controversy with Kim Zetter, senior staff reporter at Wired magazine. PHOTO: (Kenny Louie/Flickr)
