The state budget impasse is making it difficult for some poor families to have a funeral for family members who have passed away. Up until July the state would pay for about 1600 dollars worth of funeral and burial services for someone who qualified for certain public benefits.

But the state hasn’t been paying for any services for the last 10 months.

Illinois Funeral Director Association head Mary Carey says the cost has fallen to counties, funeral homes, and families of those that have died. The association says the state would have for about 8000 funerals and burials this year.
