Chicago’s Lathrop Homes are one of the country’s first public housing developments. As former Mayor Daley took aim at changing the city’s public housing units he primarily went after high rises like Cabrini Green, and the low-rise Lathrop Homes in west Lincoln Park remained intact. Generation after generation remained or returned to live in the complex. But in recent years some policies have displaced residents. Journalist Maya Dukmasova recently documented the history of Lathrop Homes, and the Chicago Housing Authority’s plans for its future in Chicago Reader. We talk with Dukmasova and a resident of the development to learn more about life at Lathrop Homes. Photo: Flickr/reallyboring
