When German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited President Trump in Washington last year, she snubbed his handshake, and offered to stand up against American exceptionalism. Now on his first official state visit with President Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron emphatically shook Trump’s hand, and committed to the two countries leading “contemporary multilateralism.”
