Nnedi Okorafor writes science fiction and fantasy for adults and kids based in modern-day Nigeria.

Growing up, she was a star athlete who excelled in tennis and track. But she was diagnosed with scoliosis at an early age and her condition continued to deteriorate until doctors recommended what was supposed to be a simple surgery.

When Okorafor woke up, she found she couldn’t move her legs and spent several months confined to a hospital bed.

That experience was the beginning of what would turn out to be her creative awakening.

Morning Shift talks with Okorafor about her latest book Broken Places and Outer Spaces: Finding Creativity In The Unexpected. It takes the reader on a journey from her hospital bed to the world of writing and fantasy.

GUEST: Nnedi Okorafor, writer of science fiction, fantasy and magical realism
