In an effort towards greater autonomy, Mexico City is in the process of drafting a new constitution. And the city is using the online crowdsourcing to give residents a voice in what they want to see in the final draft.

If a person’s petition receives 10,000 online signatures, they have the opportunity to make their case in front of a panel of experts.

So far, this experiment in digital democracy has already received 200,000 unique signers, bringing up issues of LGBT rights, animal cruelty, and the environment.

Miguel Trancozo is the communication coordinator for change.org in Mexico City. He joins us to discuss the process of crowdsourcing a constitution for Mexico’s largest city.
