“Son of Saul” (Saul fia) is a new Hungarian film, directed and co-written by László Nemes. The WWII-period drama follows a day in the life of Auschwitz concentration camp inmate, Saul Ausländer, played by Géza Röhrig. He is part of a Jewish unit called the “Sonderkommandos”. On threat of death, the Nazis forced these prisoners to dispose of Holocaust victims. “Son of Saul” is nominated for the 2016 Academy Award for “Best Foreign Language Film.” Milos Stehlik, director of Facets Multimedia, sits down with Nemes and Röhrig to talk about what many call a unique cinematic perspective on the Holocaust. “Son of Saul” opens today at Music Box Theatre in Chicago and at Landmark Renaissance Place in Highland Park.
