Actor Ethan Hawke returns to the screen in a film steeped in morose self-reflection and societal angst. In First Reformed, Hawke stars as a follows a divorced pastor (Ernst Toller) of a 250 year old church. The Church’s legacy only adds to his daily drudgery and internal burdens. When Rev. Toller encounters an obsessed environmental zealot, his world and his community changes forever. Critics compare the obsessive characters in First Reformed to Schrader’s most famous work, “Taxi Driver”, starring Robert De Niro.
