On Monday’s Afternoon Shift, The Break Room features The Clash with their song “Police on My Back” off of their album Sandinista! One of the more influential punk bands, The Clash are known for their highly politicized lyrics and diverse musical experimentation, routinely supplementing their punk sound with different genres and styles from around the world. Their magnum opus London Calling is widely called one of the greatest albums of all time.
The Break Room also features Public Enemy with their single “Welcome to the Terrordome” off of their album Fear of a Black Planet. Fronted by Chuck D and Flava Flav, Public Enemy are a classic hip-hop group that not only feature innovative, eclectic production, but also political and cultural consciousness in their lyrics. The song “Welcome to the Terrordome” addresses the murder of youth Yusef Hawkins and the 1989 riots in Virginia Beach.
