Several protesters were killed when demonstrations turned violent in southern Nepal. The protesters, from the Madhesi ethnic group, say the country’s new constitution is discriminatory. The protests follow a blockade which has been imposed along the Nepali, Indian border- a blockade that has led to fuel shortages. The blockade has hit the regions most impacted by the earthquakes that struck last spring and made recovery and rebuilding in those areas extremely difficult. Sienna Craig, a professor of anthropology at Dartmouth College has just returned from Nepal. She’s been working with local Tibetan doctors to help bring healthcare to the rural communities that were hit by the quake. She joins us to discuss what’s been happening in the country.
