Hello!

We’re deep into the holidays, which means this is finally seasonally-appropriate, and Curtis Sittenfeld has a new short story that you’ve gotta read.

But since it’s the end of the year, I thought I’d spend the next couple of weeks sharing some of my favorite things of the year with you. Today, we’re talking recipes!

I only briefly mentioned the herbed chicken salad over crispy rice in a newsletter a couple of weeks ago, but I cannot emphasize how delicious it is. When I posted it on Twitter, skeptics questioned the mint, and soap-tasters lamented the cilantro, but I’m convinced you could do this with literally any fresh herb and it’d be lovely. And now that I know how to make crispy rice full of veggies, it’s going to be a mainstay in my kitchen. It cooks faster than normal rice somehow and is so full of flavors!

Two other things that completely blew my mind this year are both dips, which might be my favorite food group. Beet dip with labneh and smoky carrot dip are both somehow both earthy and bright, delicious with pita or crackers or veggies, and a great way to add some color to your table.

On the dessert end, might I recommend molasses cookies from The Fiddlehead Cookbook, a restaurant cookbook from Juneau, Alaska. I grew up making this recipe with my mom, and they’re one of my favorite things to bake and bring to parties stacked up in a giant Ziplock bag. They’re melt-in-your-mouth delicious and the molasses and spices round everything out so beautifully. When you have these waiting for you at home, they make your day that much sweeter. They’re always a hit, and they’re photogenic AF

All right, that’s it for now — next week: my favorite TV of the year! (And if you like what you just read, sign up here to get it delivered to your inbox every Friday.)
