Back in 2015 Chicagoan Robert Marovich’s book A City Called Heaven: Chicago and the Birth of Gospel Music knocked out scholars and casual music fans alike with its authoritative look at gospel’s Chicago roots.

Now Marovich has penned the liner notes to a massive 8-disc set that encompasses 75 years of gospel music as seen through the eyes and ears of the Mississippi record label Malaco and the smaller labels it has acquired over the decades.
