The red-brick Kennedy-King College sits at the corner of 63rd and Halsted.
Grass surrounds the new urban campus. Pathways connect the six buildings.

Chancellor Wayne Watson says he envisions community people learning business and other skills here.

WATSON: And you can see a family, a family that has been traditionally cooking in the back of their kitchen in their own home, catering. You can now see them going over to Washburn Culinary School - the oldest culinary school in America.

The cooking school joins new production studios, laboratories and a childcare center. Kennedy-King moved from its old digs at 69th and Wentworth.

It was named after Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.

During the ceremony, former alderman Arenda Troutman and supporters showed up. The indicted Troutman says she helped bring in the new campus but was not invited to the event.

Mayor Richard Daley insisted that she was.
