When Chicago closed nearly 50 schools in 2013, Chicago Public Schools vowed to team up with the Illinois State Board of Education about tracking where displaced students go. Last summer CPS CEO Barbara Byrd Bennett boasted that the district knew where almost all these displaced students landed when their schools closed. An investigation by education magazine Catalyst Chicago found that wasn’t really the case. Deputy Editor Sarah Karp explains how many students are actually not accounted for by the system.
