The Obama administration is nominating a career federal prosecutor to be the new U.S. attorney for Northern Indiana.



The third time may be the charm.

After serving three stints as interim U.S. attorney, David Capp is headed toward becoming the official U.S. attorney for Northern Indiana.

The district runs from the Illinois state line to Ohio and includes Lake and Porter counties.

Capp has worked in the Hammond-based office for 24 years.He’s been serving as interim U.S. attorney since July 2007 when then U.S. Attorney Joseph Van Bokkelen resigned to become a federal judge.

Capp served as Van Bokkelen’s first assistant during the “Restore Public Integrity” initiative to weed out public corruption in East Chicago and Gary earlier this decade.

The initiative resulted in more than three dozen elected and appointed officials heading to prison.Indiana U.S. Senator Evan Bayh’s office nominated Capp, a native of Gary who lives in Porter County.

The announcement of Capp’s appointment came from the White House.

Capp still needs confirmation from the U.S. Senate.
