In Northern Ireland a series of reprisal killings that have taken place within the former Irish Republican Army (IRA) may be putting the fragile 17-year truce between the Catholic IRA-backed Sinn Féin political party and the Protestant Ulster Nationalists at risk. In August, a former member of the Provisional IRA, Kevin McGuigan Sr., was shot dead. Authorities say that McGuigan was linked to the murder of another former senior IRA member, Gerard Davison. The resulting uproar led to the resignation of the government’s top minister and most of his cabinet. Many parties have said they will not engage in negotiations to form a new government until the British government weighs in.
