A new survey shows many public university leaders are cutting back on their personal paychecks. The Chronicle of Higher Education also finds the former University of Illinois president was earning more than the national median.

The Chronicle of Higher Education’s report shows the median salary for public-university leaders rose slightly. It’s now close to $436,000. Former University of Illinois president B. Joseph White was making more than that. White, who resigned late last year due to an admissions scandal, was slated to make $450,000.

The news comes as the university grapples with a multi-million dollar shortfall. Calls to the University of Illinois were not returned.
