WBEZ brings you fact-based news and information. Sign up for our newsletters to stay up to date on the stories that matter.

Tonight, WBEZ will attempt to fulfill destiny by winning a media league softball championship. Softball is not in our blood. We usually play for fun, and perhaps win one or two games a season. But this year, it’s like 1984 Chicago magic.

Tonight, Trebes Park will be transformed into a field of dreams. A field with big, wooden bats and a big, soft ball (and perhaps some dog doo left over from neighborhood walks).

We play CHIRP (Chicago Independent Radio Project) for the title game. They beat Gapers Block to get here. And they have been riling up their squad (and fans) to come out and cheer them on tonight.

So it’s time for us to rile up the fans as well. You should come watch. I secured Christa Meyer (Puerto Muerto) to sing the national anthem through a bullhorn, former Cubs PA announcer Paul Friedman will do the line-ups and 32nd Ward Alderman Scott Waguespack to throw out the first pitch. The festivities begin at 6:15pm at Trebes Park (Webster/Racine). Peter Sagal is playing. There aren’t bleachers or seats, but there’s a long bench that could probably fit about 50.

So come on out and cheer us on. Or take to Twitter and throw out some support. You know, like these famous people have already done (thanks to Micki Maynard!!!!!):

And to top it off? BUNK from The Wire!!!!!!!! HOLY COW!!!
