Omar Barghouti is an academic, human rights activist and a co-founder of the Boycott, Sanctions and Divestment (BDS) movement. In part, its philosophy holds that the most effective way to pressure Israel to end its control of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem is for outside parties, such as governments, universities and corporations, to cease doing business or collaborating with Israel. Today, Barghouti will comment on the recent wave of violence in Israel and the Occupied Territories and why he believes BDS methods are a viable option to facilitate peace. He wrote his views on the current tensions in a Salon Magazine article titled, “Israel’s descent into unmasked, right wing extremism: A new generation rises to fight occupation, settler-colonialism, apartheid”.
