We’re told the path to a successful, well-paying career is more education. The Center on Education and the Workforce at Georgetown University found that earning a graduate level degree does lead to a higher salary but how much more depends on what you study. So it can be surprising to learn that some academics-even those with a Ph.D.-are struggling to get by financially. A recent Elle magazine article profiled a professor at Columbia College Chicago who is struggling to pay the rent and even put food on the table.
