Overeducated and underemployed: Article shows bleak reality for academics

We’re told the path to a successful, well-paying career is more education. The Center on Education and the Workforce at Georgetown University found that earning a graduate level degree does lead to a higher salary but how much more depends on what you study. So it can be surprising to learn that some academics-even those with a Ph.D.-are struggling to get by financially. A recent Elle magazine article profiled a professor at Columbia College Chicago who is struggling to pay the rent and even put food on the table. We talk with the article’s author, Alissa Quart, and professor Bri Bolin about struggling to make ends meet while armed with a Master’s Degree. Photo: Flickr/gadgetdude
