When parolees step out of jail, reentry into society can create many challenges. Natalie Moore chronicles how each year thousands of adult parolees from Illinois prisons return to a handful of Chicago neighborhoods. Many of these neighborhoods already have high rates of violence, unemployment and poverty. The large number of parolees in these areas becomes a collective burden increasingly hard to bear. Return to a familiar neighborhood can sometimes be a slippery hinder the process of finding steady employment and building a new future.
