Yesterday, U.S. Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, announced she would allow an Impeachment Inquiry of President Donald Trump. Citing various reasons, she said the final straw was that during a phone call with Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, as Trump withheld congressionally approved foreign aid to Ukraine, he asked Zelensky to reopen financial corruption investigations on presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. A transcript of the call released this morning shows Trump did specifically make the request, though he did not mention the withheld foreign aid. Back in March 2019, The Atlantic’s Yoni Appelbaum wrote a cover story on why the U.S. House should begin the impeachment process to remove President Trump from office. A senior editor at The Atlantic, he oversees its “Ideas” section. Appelbaum joins us for analysis and we’ll ask him if he wants to say, “I told you so.” We also take listener calls about the impeachment proceedings.
