When refugees make the long and often difficult journey from their homeland, they don’t have room for a lot of personal objects. Photographer Jim Lommasson has documented the few items that Iraqi refugees carried with them to Chicago. The pictures are part of an exhibit called What We Carried: Fragments from the Cradle of Civilization. Lommasson and Othman Al Ani, who is featured in the exhibit, discuss the refugee journey and the meaning of what people carry with them. Photo (Jim Lommasson)
