Aside from selecting new leaders, passing referenda and retaining judges, election days are also special because they transform our neighborhoods into voting centers. My favorite thing is finding the odd places where people exercise their voting rights. Four years ago, I enlisted our Flickr group to help document polling places across the region. This year, I decided to document every polling place in my ward—the 48th, along Chicago’s north lakefront. The ward contains 46 precincts, who vote in 39 polling places. This morning, I visited all of them.
