Today, the world may see the beginning of the end for one of the longest ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Since 1984, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, has fought an insurgency against the Turkish government on behalf of the Kurds. The Kurds are an ethnic group spread between Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. Recently, PKK founder Abdullah Ocalan negotiated a cease-fire with Turkey from the prison where he has been held since 1999. Today, the PKK has agreed to pull out of Turkey, and according to reports that is what is happening. Worldview speaks with Ali Ezzatyar, a Kurdish-American lawyer and executive director of the University of California Berkeley’s Program on Entrepreneurship and Development in the Middle East about the withdrawal.
