In 2005, riots broke out in Clichy-sous-Bois, a majority immigrant suburb on the outskirts of Paris. The 2005 riots spread to other suburbs, marking an awakening to the social and economic disparities that immigrants on the peripheries of France’s major cities face. Last week, French president Francois Hollande pledged a change. During a visit to Clichy-sous-Bois, Hollande proposed direct state investment of nearly $5bn euros in housing and job creation.
