When he was a foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune Stephen Franklin saw the many limitations of practicing journalism in conflict zones or under dictatorships. After he retired from reporting in the field, he decided to give back to the profession by training journalists in other countries on how to work around government censorship and how to deal with resentments after war. Franklin is just back from Khartoum, Sudan. In Sudan he trained journalists and educators through a U.S. State Department program. Franklin is now media project director for the Chicago-based Community Media Workshop. He’ll tell us about his experiences teaching the Sudanese what he calls “peace and reconciliation” journalism.
