Some neighborhoods on Chicago’s West Side will vote on a binding ballot initiative to create a community mental health center.

If the initiative passes, residents in areas like Garfield Park and North Lawndale will pay an extra four dollars for every 1,000 dollars they already pay in property taxes.

Activist Jacquelyn Ingram says there aren’t enough mental health clinics in the area, and those that do exist have months-long waiting lists.

“If in two to three months … you aren’t getting your medication, you’re not getting the things that you need,” Ingram said. “What happens to that person … Where do they go?”

A similar initiative passed in some Northwest Side neighborhoods in 2012.
