Mauritanian artist Noura Mint Seymali comes from music royalty; her father wrote the country’s national anthem and her mother was a famous singer. Noura also hails from a long line of griots; storytellers. But it’s only recently that she’s gained international attention for her haunting voice that’s matched so perfectly with her husband’s guitar work, which sounds like a psychedelic version of Mark Knoffler. She was recently in Chicago for a week long residency at the Old Town School of Folk Music and stopped by the WBEZ studios for a performance with her band. We’ll hear them do theri thing. Also the one drop sounds of Jamaica, gypsy rumba from Spain, Peruvian cumbia and a classic from Germany’s Kraftwerk.
