In 2012 Mexico received an estimated 22 billion dollars in remittances. Those remittance dollars, which have been flowing for decades from Mexicans living in the United States have altered just about every aspect of life in rural mexico. They’ve changed the way new homes get built, paid for public works and infrastructure projects. At times, hey’ve also changed the way life runs the village and altered the power structures and sometimes created divisions and envy that did not exist before those remittance dollars flowed in.
