The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is going to give its stadium a face lift.

Yesterday, the board of trustees approved a $116 million renovation to Memorial Stadium.

Ron Guenther is the athletic director at U of I.

He says the rehabilitation will add years to the stadium’s life.

“80 percent of that money is not going necessarily into the suites and the club sections,” Guenther says. “It’s really into the other amenities of the stadium that needed to be done: the bathrooms, the concession stands, the brickwork, the steel. Basically taking a 1924 building and giving it another 80 to 100 years.”

A five dollar surcharge will be added to tickets to help pay for the project.
