The opening ceremonies for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia are just around the corner. Circus performers and ballet dancers are set to highlight Russian culture. But a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists says a slew of issues surrounding the Sochi Olympics haven’t been covered by the Russian press, either because of self-censorship or pressure by local authorities and the government. Forced evictions, exploitation of migrant workers hired to build Olympic venues, environmental damage and corruption are just some of the stories that have gone unreported by Russian media. “Russian media’s silence about the plight of those affected by Olympic abuses comes as the climate for human rights and press freedom in the country is at a historic low point, “ the report says. Nina Ognianova, program coordinator for Europe and Central Asia for the Committee to Protect Journalists and one of the authors of the report joins us to discuss the findings.
