Suicide is the third-leading cause of death in adolescents. Gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual youth and especially vulnerable. And while the nation has seen new tactics seeking to raise tolerance and build hope for gay youth, there has also been consistent news of young people taking their own lives after years of bullying and mistreatment.

Jury selection begins today in the trial of Dahrun Ravi. Ravi is the former Rutgers University roommate of Tyler Clementi, who died by suicide after he learned Ravi and another student had filmed him with another man. Ravi could face up to ten years in prison for counts such as invasion of privacy.

Research gathered by professors at Northwestern University shows that young people like Clementi are not alone in their suicidal thoughts. The new report “Suicidal Ideation and Self-Harm in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth” looks at other risk factors, and preventative measures to suicide.
