Sam Amidon is a musician who’s been able to build on tradition, adding his own ideas without sounding contrived or removing the original feeling of a song. When it comes to his interpretations of classic American music, Amidon has walked that tightrope between admiration and exploration — and he hasn’t fallen off yet. The multi-instrumentalist’s most recent album Lily-O featured guitarist Bill Frisell, and Amidon is pushing things even further by collaborating with Wilco’s exploratory shred-meister Nels Cline, who he’s sharing a stage with Thursday evening at Evanston’s SPACE.
