Walter “King” Fleming started swinging with the band at McKinley High on Chicago’s South East side back in the late 30s. He led a variety of groups for nearly four decades, and became known for his piano playing, his arranging skills and his ability to accompany vocalists. Even in his mid-70s, Fleming was recording for Southport Records. He passed away April 1 at 91, and a memorial service is set for Monday. Musician Joanie Pallato joins us to talk about “King’s” life, music and Monday’s celebration of both. (Photo: Flickr/martijndevalk.nl)
