In an interview with Chicago Tribune’s Rick Pearson, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart says he’s running the largest mental health care facility in the state at Cook County Jail, and that’s not meant to be his role. As more community-based mental health care facilities have closed, inmates are seeking care when they enter the jail system. Sheriff Dart says his staff has been trained to handle these inmates but it’s still a great problem that has left his office under-resourced.
