Sherwood Anderson’s ‘Winesburg, Ohio’ moves to south suburban Chicago

Adapting a novel for the big screen allows for a fair amount of creative license. And director Dan Nearing definitely took his share when he adapted Sherwood Anderson’s book “Winesburg, Ohio.”

He moved the tale to south suburban Chicago and chose an all black cast. The result is “Chicago Heights” and the film starts a weeklong run Friday at the Gene Siskel Film Center.

“Eight Forty-Eight” caught up with Nearing last summer when the film screened as part of the Black Harvest Film Festival. He explained how a personal connection brought him to the project.
