Shemekia Copeland was born into the blues. Her father was the late, great guitarist and singer Johnny Copeland. Shemekia began singing on stage by age 10, and put out her first album — for Chicago’s Alligator Records — at 19. Her powerful and expressive voice has brought her a slew of awards, gigs all over the world, and none other than Koko Taylor’s daughter has dubbed her the new Queen of the Blues. Her new album, “Outskirts of Love,” pushes her craft and her range with touches of country, americana, rock, and gospel. Shemekia Copeland talks about “stretching it out” ahead of her holiday party at City Winery this Sunday.
