Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn doesn’t see a reason for slot machines at the state fair with attractions like MC Hammer and Lady Antebellum.

In the ongoing debate over gambling in the state, Gov. Quinn wasn’t thrilled about the idea of slot machines at the state fair. “Harness racing has been at the fair for a long time. But when you put in slot machines, that’s a totally different situation,” he said. “I was never excited about that.”

The Obama administration is easing their policy on illegal immigrants who have committed no crimes. Instead the Department of Homeland Security will focus on illegal immigrants with criminal records or those who pose a threat to national security or public safety. The decision means as many as 300,000 cases are up for review.

A judge ruled Thursday the state can end foster care and adoption contracts with Catholic Charities. Catholic Charities’s policy against placements to unmarried couples is a violation of the anti-discrimination law which includes civil unions, the state argued. The judge ruled that no one, including non-profits, has a legal right to a contract with the state government.

Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel hopes to save the city some cash when a private firm evaluates $500 million in city contracts. “Some of [the savings] will be in better negotiations with who we’re buying from, some will be in the bulk purchasing,” Rahm said Thursday. The savings won’t go into effect until 20136.

Millions are starving in the East African country of Somalia. Images from the famine caused by war, insurgency and drought have sparked some Chicagoans into action. One church in the Woodlawn neighbor raised $25,000 for UNICEF.
