Jeffrey Kukes says his son Andy grew up as an intelligent and regular kid. But when he got into his teens, Kukes and his wife noticed a change in their son. They didn’t know until Andy later took his life that he suffered from social anxiety, a disorder that the National Institute of Mental Health estimates affects about 15 million Americans. Kukes is in Chicago Wednesday with a team of experts to explain some of the warning signs that parents can look for with teens who may have social phobia. Kukes and Pat McGrath of Alexian Brothers’ Center for Anxiety and Compulsive Disorders preview the seminar and what warning signs to pay attention to in young people. Photo: Flickr/Theophilos
