Carter Wagner was 12 when he came out to his parents. He had just gotten back from summer camp, where he had a lot of time to think, and he realized that he could no longer keep the fact that he’s gay a secret. Carter was in eighth grade when he first visited the StoryCorps booth in Chicago with his mom Nicole Wagner. Now, as he enters his freshman year of college, they listen back to their earlier conversation.
