Nina Adams and Nancy Polacek have lived on the same block for years. They’re friends, like family, and they recently visited the StoryCorps booth in the Chicago Cultural Center.
Two years ago, Adams had a health scare that almost killed her. Polecek sat with her in the hospital throughout the whole ordeal. Adams survived. But the experience changed her. For one, it made her want to talk more deliberately about death and dying, a topic she’d avoided for a long time, even with her closest family members.
