Nicole Redmond’s father is African American and her mother is Caucasian. She’s always felt like a mixture of both those worlds. Then she joined the Peace Corps and went to the African country of Guinea. The experiences she had there changed how she sees herself. She came to the StoryCorps booth at the Chicago Cultural Center to reflect on what that change has meant to her.
This story was recorded through a partnership between the Peace Corps and StoryCorps Chicago.
StoryCorps’ mission is to provide Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to share, record and preserve their stories. These excerpts, edited by WBEZ, present some of our favorites from the current visit, as well as from previous trips.
