Ray Gomez and Alex Ewers have been married for six months. Alex, 24, grew up as an Evangelical Christian in Kankakee, in central Illinois. Ray, 22, was raised in Mexico, also in a religious household. Ray was always attracted to men, but he said it wasn’t until he read the writings of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, a Mexican nun and poet from the 17th century, that he understood the meaning of love. A few months ago, Alex interviewed Ray in the StoryCorps booth at the Chicago Cultural Center. They’ve been together for two years now, but they’re still learning about each other.
