Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner has already taken aim at unions at state agencies by allowing workers to gain union benefits without having to pay dues. He’s also pushing right-to-work zones that would allow municipalities and even wards to vote for a similar provision for public and private workers. And while a new report shows overall union membership in Illinois has gone down by almost 100,000 over the last decade, the report argues the labor movement is still a force to be reckoned with. We talk with one of the report’s authors, University of Chicago’s Virginia Parks, about some of the reasons behind the shifting numbers in union membership and what it means for the governor’s efforts in Illinois.
