It’s Day 2 of a teachers strike in Northwest suburban Huntley. At this hour teachers and school board members are meeting with federal mediators.

Parents of some 8,200 children had to find alternative childcare options again today.

Parent Paul Troy says, “Because of the strike I’m forced to work from home today. We’re trying to keep them busy with spirograph.”

Teachers and the school board remain divided over salary and the organization of the school day. Tensions heated up today, with the district threatening to cancel teachers’ insurance unless they paid their premiums.

“The rally that we just held was to collect payment from our members to take it over to the district office,” says president of the teachers union, Julie Hunter.

Superintendent John Burkey says the district will continue to pay its portion of premiums. Meanwhile, teachers from north suburban Wilmette District 39 notified the state today of their intent to strike.
