On this week’s Global Notes: the story of a 102-year-old pop star. Bi Kidude was known as the Queen of Taraab, a style of music that blends North African and Middle Eastern traditions.
British filmmaker Andy Jones captured her life and international career in the film As Old As My Tongue. In 2012, he heard Kidude had been kidnapped from her home in Zanzibar, and picked up the camera again. That part of her life is told in Jones’ new follow up film, I Shot Bi Kidude. He joins Worldview, and Tony Sarabia (host of Radio M and Morning Shift) to talk about the film and Kidude’s music.
