On Sunday, Paraguayans went to the polls to elect a new president. Horacio Cartes, the candidate from the Colorado Party, won by a plurality. The Colorado Party ruled Paraguay for decades until the election of Fernando Lugo in 2008. Last year, Lugo was removed from power in a parliamentary maneuver that some have called a “legal coup.” Now, the Colorado Party is back in power. Social anthropologist Kregg Hetherington brings us an update on Paraguay’s election and other issues facing the country.
